The Office of Religious Education at Saint Augustine Parish serves the parish community through programming designed to further and challenge the faith of our children and teens. The Church tells us that one of the goals of catechesis is to “better proclaim the faith and, in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, lead individual Christians and the community to maturity of faith, a richer living of the fullness of the gospel message” (Sharing the Light of Faith, no.37). With this in mind St. Augustine’s strives to continue the important work of handing on the living Christian Tradition in an authentic and meaningful way, using the many gifts and talents of our volunteers.
Students in first grade enter into a two-year course of preparation to celebrate two important sacraments: Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. These sacraments are celebrated in the second-grade year. Students must be baptized (or show proof of baptism) prior to receiving these sacraments. Students who enter our program after grade two but have not received Reconciliation and Eucharist prepare for the sacraments in addition to attending regular classes with their peers.
Students in grades 9 and 10 are in a two-year program preparing them to participate in the sacrament of Confirmation, which takes place during the tenth-grade year. Baptism, Reconciliation, and Eucharist must be received prior to being Confirmed.
As with any parish, St. Augustine’s relies on volunteers to teach religious education classes and minister to our youth. We are always interested in strengthening our volunteer pool. No prior experience is necessary, just the willingness and desire to walk with the youth of our parish on this part of their faith journey. God invites us all to share our gifts and talents with our community—is God asking you to bear witness to the gospel as a catechist or youth minister? Call 223-5285 to find out more about the challenges and rewards of this vital parish ministry!
